Social Purpose & Responsibility
Since the mid 1990s my efforts of serving the LGBTQ Community has always been first and foremost. I view this commitment to Social Purpose not only as my personal responsibility but also as a privilege.
Contrary to popular belief, not all young HIV-negative gay men want to be infected with HIV, and not all HIV+ gay men wish to infect an HIV-negative gay man. Therefore, an increasing number of gay men in America are choosing to have sex with their own HIV status. Within the HIV+ gay community, the two most common are; 1) The POZ CODE (P4P), and 2) The Bio Hazard symbol.
The POZ CODE - (P4P)
Politically and now FASHIONABLY correct!
A community driven HIV Prevention Strategy that takes HIV "prevention" SERIOUSLY (responsible sex). The HIV+ Code that began in New York City, NY back in the mid 1990's with BRANDON'S POZ PARTY - NYC where one HIV+ gay male chooses to have safe sex OR unsafe sex (barebacking, BB, raw only) with another HIV+ gay male.
The POZ CODE was first introduced in the AOL Chat rooms in the mid 1990's (there were no gay sex hookup sites back then) so HIV+ gay men worldwide could meet, socialize and hookup with other HIV+ gay men. In the years to come and with the internet as the driving force of communication, HIV+ gay men "came out" over night to disclose their HIV+ status to total strangers.
We consciously work to achieve consistency between our perceptions of self, our own behavior and feedback from the world around us. There is a way to change our perception of ourselves and our behavior if we choose to be consciously involved in learning, and have a desire to improve our actions. We have to be willing to go outside our comfort zone and challenge ourselves to see the situation differently.
Some of us just wear a tee shirt that says P4P, HIV+, POZ, POZ PRIDE or other HIV+ empowerment messages. We have been willfully and openly disclosing our HIV+ status for the simple fact that we CHOOSE NOT to infect others, and to empower other HIV+ men to be open and honest about HIV Prevention.
By disclosing our HIV+ status, we help support the HIV negative community to remain HIV negative, and we take a leadership role by being sexually and socially responsible. A common HIV Prevention, Status Disclosure, Communication Strategy that is lowering HIV Stigma nationwide. Thus proving that HIV can be stopped and that the gay community is MORE socially (and sexually) responsible than the “experts” give us credit for.
SPECIAL NOTE: HIV Stigma is gone, HIV Status Disclosure is increasing, there is COMMUNICATION, RESPECT, UNDERSTANDING and we are UNIFIED as we continue to stop HIV. You only need to connect the social and sexual dots, and understand the research.
