Questioning the status quo, and RAISING the standard of HIV prevention in America since 2002.
UB2 MEANING and HISTORY: 1996 - TODAY
Research confirms without doubt, that we are in fact communicating our HIV status both online and in person with confidence and therefore, HIV Stigma is no longer an issue. Here is a brief summary of how the HIV Status Disclosure phrase "UB2" went mainstream via the internet, and what each term means for both HIV+ and HIV-negative communities. I didn't create the Internet, I simply realized the opportunity to use the internet as a personal communication tool regarding HIV Status Disclosure, socially and sexually, and empowered others to copy the ideaThe evolution of a thought.

Back in NYC in 1996, there was no internet as you know it today. I became fed up with the lack of an HIV+ support network that met my needs socially and sexually. Therefore, I used the only method available at the time - print media - and posted my personal phone number and my email address as contacts. And so it began, guys who were interested in learning more about BRANDON'S POZ PARTY  and BOY TOYS - NY  contacted me (with interest or hate) and I replied back with the details to meet up or no reply for my haters. The private MSM parties therefore became the foundation (the bedrock of face to face contact) that the HIV+ clinical support groups lacked: open, personal contact with our peers in a comfortable setting - socially and sexually - without judgment.

Both HIV+ and HIV-negative guys who attended launched our newly discovered social and sexual freedoms,  just by exchanging our email addresses and or phone numbers with other attendees. This was a powerful behavioral changing moment in the history of HIV Prevention - Freedom of Choice based on HIV status. A couple of years later I would meet two directors of the NYSDOH (New York State Department of Health) and they will tell me that this HIV Prevention Strategy is called: Serosorting. Brandon's POZ Party and Boy Toys - NY were the personal, face to face venues to meet while the contact exchange (the exchange of email addresses and phone numbers) became the "social media network" at the time. The very spark of the HIV Status Disclosure online social and sexual networks you enjoy today. It's a shame that the researchers never understood this.

We had AOL CHAT (1997 and limited to 25 people per chat room) and MESSAGE BOARDS. Print media, land line phones and PAGERS were the norm. However, as online communication tools and networks evolved and became more user friendly - the gay community ran with it - The Internet and Sex in the 1990s.  (tell Christian Grov I said "hello") the "UB2" Status Disclosure catchphrase went viral and beyond the gay community of NYC. "Sandor soon branded the monthly soiree Brandon’s POZ Party and took it digital, helping more men find the party’s dates and locations and letting them meet via an Internet message board." (POZ Magazine 2007, Status Seekers article, Lucile Scott)

"Matchmaking Web sites for men who are H.I.V. positive have flourished, and many personal ads on more general sites, also include details and demands from prospective sex partners about H.I.V. status. In the shorthand of the sexually explicit personals, "POZ UB2" indicates a man who is H.I.V positive seeking the same. In a recent item under the headline "Long Party Sessions Wanted," one San Francisco man asked to meet "sometime today" and posted his age, height, hair and eye colors, and the message "neg (u2 plz)."" (NYT article, 2005, A Good Report on AIDS, and Some Credit The Web".

Therefore, as a direct result of more than two decades of HIV Status Disclosure for both HIV+ and HIV-negative people nationwide, social and sexual behavioral researchers are required to address this question: Are We Winning or Losing The War Against HIV? (YouTube video best heard with headphones)

The UB2 MEANING for both HIV+ and HIV-negative communities:

The POZ Code used in the profiles of social and sexual online networks:

HIV+ For HIV+ (P4P, POZ4POZ, POZUB2, etc):
These are common codes for someone (gay, bisexual or straight) seeking a person of the same HIV+ status for sex (safe - condoms used or unsafe - bareback). These are also used to inform the HIV-negative community that the person is: 1) HIV+, 2) Willfully disclosing his HIV+ status to others up front so others can make an informed choice, 3) Choosing to PHYSICALLY BREAK THE CYCLE of new HIV transmissions (stop HIV in it's tracks), 4) Engaging in social responsibility (being sexually responsible by helping to stop the spread of HIV) and 5) Supporting the HIV-negative community by being respectful of their freedom of choice (to not have sex - safe or unsafe) with the HIV+ person. As an HIV+ gay man (HIV+ since 1983) I respect the choice of an HIV-negative gay man not to have sex with me.

The POZ UB2 CODE is a community driven HIV Prevention Strategy that takes HIV "prevention" SERIOUSLY (responsible sex). A Freedom Of Choice issue to pick and chose their sex partner based on HIV status and to  physically break the cycle of new HIV transmissions NOW, rather than wait for a cure, vaccine or "wonder drug". A commonsense, socially responsible HIV Prevention, Status Disclosure, Communication Strategy that is lowering HIV Stigma nationwide. Proving that HIV CAN be stopped and that the gay community is MORE socially and sexually responsible than "The HIV Experts" give us credit for. (This is called: Behavioral Change and something the researchers missed)

The HIV-negative Code used in the profiles of social and sexual online networks:

HIV- For HIV- (NEG4NEG, N4N, NEGUB2, D&D FREE etc):
Similar to the POZ UB2 CODE but with one exception : "D&D FREE" (drug and disease free - the person is not interested in drug use and is HIV-negative). These are the common codes for someone (gay, bisexual or straight) seeking a person of the same HIV-negative status for sex (safe - condoms used or unsafe - bareback). These are also used to inform the HIV+ community that the person is: 1) HIV-negative,  2) Willfully disclosing his HIV-negative status to others up front so others can make an informed choice, 3) Choosing to PHYSICALLY BREAK THE CYCLE of new HIV transmissions (stop HIV in it's tracks), 4) Engaging in social responsibility (being sexually responsible by helping to stop the spread of HIV), 5) Supporting the HIV+ community by being respectful of their freedom of choice (to not have sex - safe or unsafe) with the HIV-negative person. AND 6) The most important: The HIV-negative person gets tested regularly and knows their current HIV-negative status.   Once again, as an HIV+ gay man (HIV+ since 1983) I respect the choice of an HIV-negative gay man not to have sex with me.

The HIV-UB2 CODE is a community driven HIV Prevention Strategy that takes HIV "prevention" SERIOUSLY (responsible sex).
